FAQ

What is a zine?
A zine (short for magazine) is a collaborative production created and distributed by fans for other fans. They usually take the form of small magazines or books containing a themed collection of works, like art, writing, and fan-made merchandise. They can be digital-only or include physical components sold in bundles of various size.
What is the scope of this zine?
"On the Prowl" is a curated (with applications), digital/PDF only zine with digital merch options.
What is happening to the profits?
On February 19th 2025, all profits made from the zine have been donated to World ParaVolley, the organization administering and advocating for amateur and professional Volleyball for the physically disabled.
(Financial Transparency Documentation)
Does this zine have a theme?
No, this is a general zine.
The MSBY4 as characters are our theme <3
Does that mean every piece includes all 4 characters/are other characters also included?
The focus of all pieces is on the MSBY4 members.
Some pieces also include other Haikyuu!! characters (eg. the rest of the MSBY Black Jackal Team) as mentions and background appearances.
What is the overall rating of the zine?
The rating is "Teen Up".
Some pieces include mentions of eg. anxiety attacks, mild sports injuries, swear words and other sensitive topics, but are generally NSFW and General (= no romantic ships).
Are AUs included?
The focus of the zine is on canon-compliant pieces, but we also feature a small number of AU/canon-divergent pieces.
My question isn't answered here.
If you have any more questions, feel free to send us an e-mail <3

Application Guidelines

General Requirements
• 15 years or older at the time applications close
• All samples, portfolio pieces and final zine contributions must be SFW
• Must have a Discord account or be willing to make one if accepted
• All works must be new creations for this project—we do not accept any works created with or with the help of AI!
Artists
• We are looking to include
Page Art = "Normal" zine art, on an A5 canvas (full- or half-body characters, full setting/scenery background, highest level of rendering you can achieve) — includes other full-page art forms like comics, etc;
Spot Art = "Partial" art piece that directly relates to parts of a writer's fic (objects relevant for the plot, character designs, scenes with incomplete backgrounds, etc.) — find some examples HERE;
Digital Merch = Digitals (Emotes, Icons, Twitter/Tumblr Banners, Phone or Laptop Wallpapers, etc) or Printables (note sheet/to-do-list/planner designs, print-at-home stickers, etc).
You would like to contribute something else? Feel free to reach out to us and tell us about it <3
• Both traditional and digital art are welcome.
• Apply with a Portfolio that includes at the minimum 5 art pieces in the kind of style/shape that you want to contribute to this zine—This can be any platform that can be viewed without additional permissions or an account (eg. google drive folder with view permission for everyone with link, Instagram, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Curated Twitter Art Thread, Curated Tumblr Art Tag, etc).
• At least one (1) portfolio piece must feature a MSBY4 character —more/other Haikyuu samples are appreciated but not required.
• Artists are expected to create at least 1 A5 page worth of art (eg. 1 page art, 4 quarter-page spot arts, 1 printable merch, set of other merch)—Additional contributions or contributions exceeding 1 page are, of course, more than welcome <3Writers
• We are looking for both prose/fic writers and poetry/lyric writers.
You would like to contribute something else? Feel free to reach out to us and tell us about it <3
• Apply with a sample doc including 2–3 of your best works with a word count between 1–2.5k each—You can find a template to use HERE.
• At least one (1) sample must be Haikyuu—pieces focussed on MSBY4 characters are welcomed but not mandatory.
• At least one (1) sample must be a completed story within the word count, others may be excerpts from longer fics.
• Provide a portfolio that includes at the minimum 3 more written pieces—This can be any platform that can be viewed without additional permissions or an account (eg. google drive folder with view permission for everyone with link, Ao3, Wordpress, FanFiction.net, a Curated Tumblr writing tag)—please do not submit Instagram or Twitter Threads.
• Writers are expected to create one work with a word count of 1.5–5k words.
• This can be in one piece or spread across several shorter works.
I still have a question.
